Anyone here experienced with the legal process of marrying a local? Will I only need a Birth Certificate and Passport? Anything that I should expect? Any tips on making it smooth yet still follow the legal process? Thanks in advance.

Dime my wife is a local and we got married in our home by some sort of official. I know my wife used a lawyer and all went well. I have a certificate of matrimony from the Republica De Costa Rica Registro Civil. It basically has our names and ages, whether or not we were ever divorced (I am but they didn't require proof in this case) My passport number, her ceduala number and it has a seal of the Republica De Costa Rica. You are going to need this document if you ever want to get your fiance an immigration visa. This document we got from the lawyer later. I remember there was a book we signed during the ceremony and the usual exchange of rings. We both had a witness plus there were 20 or 30 guests. I remember the lawyer (a female) was not expensive. The whole process was not very difficult mainly because my wife took care of all the details. I think you have my phone number and EM addy contact me and if you want I will let my wife answer any questions you might have. You can contact a regualr abagodo also and get the information required for an American to marry a Tica. In any case congrats and best of luck, wil.

The book that you sign is the laywers "protocolo", its where they record every single thing they do (well not including bribes and the like :lolBIG: )

Once you are married then you can get the list of documents you need in order to get a residency here. The problem is not getting the docs but complying with the multiple layers of verifying its authenticity, it requires signatures from both a US County Clerk? and a CR Consul in the States.........

Anyway, you pay a small fee to the lawyer for his services and sign here and there and that's it.

Getting married is NEVER the problem, its the opposite ........... :money8:
